Cheeky Girl 'saddened' by Opik seat loss

Cheeky Girl Gabriela Irimia has expressed her sadness after her former fiancé Lembit Opik lost his seat in the House of Commons.

The Liberal Democrat politician suffered after a 13.2% swing to Conservative candidate Glyn Davies last night as the Conservatives became the single largest party in parliament but fell short of a majority.

According to 24Dash, an email from Irimia to PA suggested that Opik should have been used more by his party in the run-up to the election.

"I was very sad to hear that Lembit has lost his seat as MP for Montgomeryshire. This Should Never Have Been Allowed To Happen!" she said. "Lembit's priority in life was always his politics, the Lib Dems, his job as an MP.

"On his first visit to our house in Sussex, he sat in the kitchen and told us all that politics and the Liberal Party would always be first in his life! I understood this, and accepted it."

She continued: "The voters have lost a dedicated man who cared for his constituency and the people in it. It was his life!

"So, he is showman, that's great. I'm in showbiz, politics is showbiz, and at least they had an MP everybody in the country knew!"

Irimia added: "Because of his high media profile, Lembit is a key figure in politics. I still can't understand why the Lib Dems didn't make more use of him, especially with TV appearances.

"His experience and knowledge would have given Nick Clegg a vital support, WITHOUT OVERSHADOWING HIM! Lembit would have got a lot of airtime and TV exposure for the party. The Lib Dems needed EVERY VOTE THEY COULD GET!"
